After Being Bullied For Her Skin Color, This Young Business Owner Started Her Own Clothing Line

Kheris Rogers’ grandmother taught her the phrase “Flex in your complexion” to help her build confidence. But she had no idea that it would soon become the name of a clothing line, or that her granddaughter would become a successful young business owner.

From Bullying to Support

Rogers experienced such awful bullying about her race from her mostly white elementary school classmates that her mother moved her to a different school during the 2013-2014 school year. But the bullying continued at her new school, although her new classmates were also black. They teased Rogers about her dark complexion, breaking down her self-confidence. (1)

Rogers and her older sister Taylor Pollard would often use the phrase to lift their spirits. In 2017, Pollard tweeted some family photos with the hashtag #FlexinInHerComplexion. The post quickly went viral, and Rogers received an overwhelming number of positive messages. Many told Rogers how beautiful she was, and others shared that they had been through similar experiences of bullying. (1)

Young Business Owner

Encouraged by the response to the photos and hashtag, the sisters decided to harness their positive energy. They came up with the idea of creating a clothing line and putting their grandmother’s phrase on t-shirts. In April 2017, they opened their business aptly named: Flexin’ In My Complexion. Rogers was just 10 years old at the time. (1)

The girls’ mother gave them $100 to start the business. They invested some of it in building a website, and they learned how to screen print t-shirts from someone their mom knew. They made batches of t-shirts in their mother’s garage in Los Angeles. (1)

Viral Success

Flexin’ In My Complexion took off just as quickly as the original tweet. Shortly after Rogers and Pollard opened their business, rapper Snoop Dogg posted about them on Instagram, bringing attention to their new brand. (1)

The young business owners have sold over 10,000 t-shirts and made more than $110,000 in revenue as of the date of this writing. And celebrities other than Snoop Dogg have taken notice. Actress, producer, and writer Lena Waithe and actress Lupita Nyong’o have posted photos of themselves wearing Flexin’ In My Complexion Shirts on Instagram. Music artist and producer Alicia Keys messaged Rogers to tell her she also bought a shirt. (1)

Besides t-shirts, Rogers and Pollard offer a tank top, hoodie, and baby bib that feature the phrase “Flexin’ In My Complexion”. They also sell a backpack and bomber jacket adorned with the words “The Miseducation of Melanin” and gorgeous graphics that are undoubtedly inspired by the album cover of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Exciting Opportunities

Since starting the business, Rogers has had opportunities that are rare for people her age. In 2017, she was the youngest person to show her clothing during New York Fashion Week. And Lebron James chose her to be part of an ad campaign for a collection with Nike. She was even on America’s Next Top Model with Tyra Banks and made Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 in 2018. (3)

But no matter how much recognition Rogers gets, she stays true to Flexin’ In My Complexion’s original purpose. “Flexin’ in My Complexion means to me that you are beautiful,” she says. (3)
